Compass is Your Next Tour Guide

Compass– Augmented Maps is a mobile application designed to delight and inform city visitors by transforming traditional city maps into an interactive tourism experience powered by AI and augmented reality. Beyond navigating like a traditional map, Compass customizes and enhances existing physical city maps to create a personalized and delightful experience for each traveler.

The app provides core features like map spatial augmentation, transit/weather/information overlays, landmark AR experiences, and an AI tour guide, creating a personalized experience like having a Boston guru tour guide on your phone.

We built this platform using Unity for 3D rendering and leveraged LiDAR 3D scanning to achieve the necessary sub-meter positional accuracy—a crucial factor for reliable AR . We utilized image tracking to help locate the 3D assets on the physical map. We integrated an AI tourism assistant to help visitors answer any questions and provide information. For onboarding screens, we utilized Figma Make to make the prototyping faster.
